Established in 1996 by well-known design partners David Kaufman and Tom Segal, Kaufman Segal Design provides design expertise to clients in Chicago, across the nation and abroad.

While running their own design firms, David and Tom collaborated on several projects. With varying backgrounds and strengths, the duo found their synergy led to great success and ultimately decided to join forces.

The partners developed the uncanny ability to translate client requests into a variety of styles. However, they are best known for fashioning a new take on classic, timeless elegance that appears effortlessly evolved.

In 19 years, David and Tom have won numerous industry awards, including ASID Design Excellence awards and a VOX/Out Style and Design award. They’ve been listed on Luxe Interiors’ Gold List, CS Interiors’ Best in Design, and among BuildDirect’s 15 Best Interior Designers in Chicago. Their projects have been published in the Chicago Tribune, Luxe, CS Interiors, Traditional Home and on HGTV’s Designers Challenge.

The Kaufman Segal Design team is rounded out with Kimberly O’Donnell, Stephen Young, Scott Grooms, and Lindsay Angyus.

Our design process began with one question: What is our ideal study, and how would it feel and function in our own home? Our goal was to create a space that is functional enough for reading and working, yet sophisticated enough for lounging and entertaining. As a team we collaborated and let our individual visions of style intermix and inspire us.

We began with an amazing wool and silk rug that set the color palette and tone of the room. From there, we selected specific elements, which continued to lead to additional elements, until we had a fully balanced design.

The use of a space is not limited by its name. A pair of chaises provides an intimate lounge setting for guests opposite the angled desk, which allows for a quiet space to work. The monolithic fireplace grounds the room, while the textural wall coverings soften the masculine overtones of the streamline furniture. We accented with brass and gold details to add a touch of glamour and selected sculptural sconces that act as functional art in the space.

The study truly reflects the essence of Kaufman Segal Design: timeless design that exudes effortless elegance.
